The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) has decided to permanently extend the recreational scallop season by two additional weeks – from July 1 to September 24.  The season previously closed on September 10.

After determining that two years of scallop season extensions did not significantly  impact the bay scallop population, the (FWC) decided June 28 to permanently extend the recreational scallop season  by adding two weeks to the end.

Hopefully, the additional two weeks will help increase business  and tourism opportunities in the open harvest areas along Florida’s west coast during a time of the year when other fisheries are closed and tourism is slower.

Bay scallops are tend to be larger at the end of the summer, and harvesting larger scallops should appeal to many scalloping fans.
